Thoughts?
It should, in theory, work great for a cheap self extraction tool assuming you can lock your differential (I can) and you wouldn't need to draw a lot of line. I was thinking about having one made up using an old steel wheel.

Depends on how strong you're CV joints and half shafts are. You'd be putting a lot of extra strain on them depending on how stuck the truck is.

As far as I know, it's popular between the REAL offroaders, because it helps to free any mired vehicle: just tie the loop of the wire on a tree, and push the gas!

The first things that came to my, not entirely reliable, mind were the ability to control the speed accurately and easily and the loading of the wheel bearings.

Interesting idea. I don't know anyone to have ever tried this. Do you have floating axles ?
If you break an axle shaft with a semi-floating axle, you don't want a high tension cable to fling a wheel in the air and kill someone. (Not likely, but maybe)

hmm, good point, the birfs are pretty damn tough as are the axle shafts

full floating front and rear. This is an old concept and they are sold in some countries.

I'd do it if you think your setup is strong enough. Easier than a winch, just give it gas and you're unstuck

They are full ton axles equiv in strength to a dana 60, so I don't think...so long as I keep the shock loads down...it would hurt anything. I don't put myself in get stuck situations often (hence no winch) but having this onboard would go a long away in making me feel better on long drives in the desert in case the weather changes.

It's worth looking into then, I know a lot of guys back in the day would hook their Series Landies up with them to great effect.

The cable in the picture looks way undersized. Not exactly sure how well it would work with the OEM wheels (I could see it scratching them up bad). Also are you supposed to install and remove the line for each extraction? Sounds like a big PITA especially when it starts to fray.
Why not get a warn VR series, which are reasonably priced, and get a receiver hitch installed on the front of your 80? The hitch could be super useful for other stuff as well.

If they are as strong as a Dana 60, then I'd say you're covered. I'd do it; extra functionality and its a cool idea.

I've gone down that line of thought but hitch mounted winches are enormous and I would have to cart it around all the time, this would be less so. My capstan Idea would be more like this.
Where I would use a tow strap for the line and keep it far away from the wheels.
That way I could keep it in a small bag and only pull it out when I needed it, if ever.

Even that one is hooking directly to the wheel (scratching seems inevitable). Also think about what a total chore this would be to install when you're stuck in water or mud. I would keep the winch in my garage 90% of the time when DDing and install it on the receiver before going out on the trail. They do stick out a bit but just have someone fab your front receiver hitch up nice and high on the front bumper.
The tow strap idea is very smart though.

What I really want is a winch...what I don't want is another 150 lbs on my front (dual battery plus winch) and another $1200 bill.

So what happens when the stress jerks the steering off to one side and the strap comes off of the hub? Sounds to me like you're going to have a bad time. Things that work well aren't cheap, and things that are cheap don't work well (usually, adapted from "good service isn't cheap and cheap service isn't good")

they've been use longer than we've had the modern electric winch, they are pretty safe if not foolproof

You don't need the duals unless you are going to be using it A LOT, I've used mine in some hairy/demanding situations on my single battery and been just fine (I even fried the motor once). I hear you on the weight though - I've resigned myself to a heavy ass rig.
As for money - did no one warn you before you bought the 80 that they are almost as big a money pit as a boat?
